If Donald Trump is a man of his word, Roger Goodell might want to start looking for another job.
That’s obviously an exaggeration, but as the president-elect gets set to take office after winning a historic 2016 election, now seems appropriate to flash back to January.
During a Trump rally in Massachusetts, one fan asked the Republican presidential candidate if he’d fire the NFL commissioner if elected president. Here’s how Trump responded:
Well, there you have it. Happy trails, Roger.
Of course, even the president of the United States has no authority to magically take over the NFL and fire Goodell, no matter how much the commissioner has tarnished the good name of Trump’s close friends, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Besides, politicians say plenty of things on the campaign trail they don’t actually mean. (Bottom line: Goodell isn’t going anywhere.)
Yet it appears Trump isn’t the biggest Goodell supporter, and those who opposed his election but can’t stand the commissioner might take some solace in that.
