The Chicago Cubs defeated the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night in Game 7 of the World Series, securing their first title since 1908. But while the epic game and Chicago’s eventual celebration captured everyone’s attention, the Cubs still had an eye toward next season.
Believe it or not, the Cubs actually added a player to their organization Wednesday, just as they were about to snap a 108-year championship drought. The Cubs claimed right-handed pitcher Conor Mullee off waivers from the New York Yankees, earning him a spot on Chicago’s 40-man roster.
It wasn’t like Mullee was going to suit up for the Cubbies as they faced the Tribe in Game 7. Heck, he might not even stay on the 40-man roster beyond the offseason. But the timing of the move is pretty hilarious, if nothing else. They technically completed the transaction before Game 7, but some who found out Thursday couldn’t help but wonder if the addition was a product of Theo Epstein dabbling in too much bubbly after the Cubs’ victory.
Who seeks out a 28-year-old, injury prone minor leaguer while preparing for the biggest game in franchise history? The Cubs, apparently. Guess that’s why they’re the champs.
