Carson Palmer doesn’t think he’s finished yet.
The veteran quarterback and the Arizona Cardinals were eliminated from postseason contention after Sunday’s 48-41 loss to the New Orleans Saints. So naturally, Palmer and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald were asked to speculate on their respective futures with the team.
Palmer, who has thrown 11 touchdown passes in the last five games, is under contract for the 2017 season after signing an extension before the season began.
Fitzgerald, who also signed an extension before the season, was a bit more vague about playing next season.
The Cardinals, who made it to the NFC Championship Game last season, were expected to once again be one of the top teams in the NFC. That has not been the case, however, as the Cardinals have lost four of their last five games, and their record now stands at 5-8-1. Fitzgerald and Palmer both have had adequate seasons, but the team around them has not lived up to expectations.
A defense that was one of the most feared in the league a season ago has dipped slightly because of an inconsistent secondary, apart from cornerback Patrick Peterson. The offensive line has dealt with injuries all season, which has led to Palmer being sacked 39 times this year.
But with electric running back David Johnson and a solid defensive nucleus, the Cardinals have the foundation to be competitive in 2017, should Palmer and Fitzgerald elect to return.
