No one needs a reason for trying to change his or her life for the better. However, a specific incident might have led Lamar Odom to again seek help in his battle against addiction.

Odom, who recently checked into rehab, flew to Delaware in September to visit a childhood friend, William Gregory, who’s currently serving a 26-year sentence for attempted murder, according to TMZ Sports. During the visit, Gregory reportedly spoke with Odom about the virtue of redemption, which inspired the former NBA star.

Odom and Gregory spent 45 minutes chatting about Odom’s divorce from Khloe Kardashian, the basketball career he let slip away and the loneliness that’s come with losing his support system, per TMZ Sports. Odom’s deceased son’s birthday also might have played a role in his decision to re-enter rehab, especially with it being so close to the holidays, when the threat of a possible relapse is heightened.

Odom, a two-time NBA champion, last played during the 2012-13 season. He spent time with the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks over the course of his 14-year career and since has struggled with drug and alcohol abuse.
