Horace Grant Has Feel-Good Reason For Why He Wore His Famous Goggles

When you think of Horace Grant, you think of the goggles.

The four-time NBA champion wore the thick lens throughout his 17-year career, and the specs took a life of their own.

However, in a Reddit AMA (ask me anything), Grant explained why he wore the goggles. Of course, part of the reason was his poor eyesight, but he said there was a more important reason.

“I got them because I was legally blind,” he said. “I wore em because of that for a few years. After a few years, I got Lasik surgery, but I kept wearing them without the prescription lenses because I had grandparents and parents come up to me and thank me for wearing them. Their kids and grandkids would get made fun of by wearing protective eyewear playing sports, so I kept wearing them to help make it cool to wear goggles for the kids.”

Grant, goggles and all, certainly made a nice career for himself and hopefully inspired others throughout the process.
