Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, who finished second and third, respectively, in this year’s Heisman Trophy voting, weren’t the only ones to spend time with Lamar Jackson after the Louisville quarterback won the award Saturday night.
Jackson also was graced with Johnny Manziel’s presence, for better or worse.
Jackson revealed Monday on “The Dan Patrick Show” that he spent time with Manziel after winning the Heisman Trophy and that the former college football standout/NFL dud had some advice.
“He was telling me, ‘Man, have fun in college,’ ” Jackson said. ” ‘You can only stay there a certain amount of time. Have fun with it.’ ”
Manziel’s advice makes sense seeing as how he peaked while at Texas A&M, winning the Heisman Trophy in 2012 before completely flopping with the Cleveland Browns after they selected him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. It would behoove Jackson to aim for a more fruitful path.
Patrick noted in his interview with Jackson that Manziel also joined the show after winning his Heisman Trophy award and asked the 19-year-old quarterback if he was ready for the changes that come with earning such a prestigious honor. Jackson responded by saying all the right things.
“I’m going to have to be staying in the house a lot more than I did before. Can’t really go to the store how I wanted to, how I usually do,” Jackson said. “I’ve had a couple of Louisville fans come up to me. It’s all love, but now that I’m here I know it’s going to be even crazier.”
Let’s hope, for Jackson’s sake, things don’t get too crazy.
