There finally might be a job that can lure Jon Gruden out of the broadcast booth.
Gruden has turned down job after job on both the college and professional level over the past eight seasons to stay with ESPN. However, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, the Los Angeles Rams’ head-coach opening might appeal to the “Monday Night Football” analyst.
The Rams are looking for a coach who can ignite an offense that has been lackluster, to say the least. Gruden, who is known for his innovative offensive mind, certainly would fit that mold. He also has the persona to thrive under the bright lights of Hollywood.
With NFL television ratings down, some of Gruden’s former coaching colleagues believe the time is right for him to jump back into coaching. The Rams have last year’s No. 1 overall pick in quarterback Jared Goff and an emerging star in running back Todd Gurley, but they couldn’t find an offensive spark under recently fired coach Jeff Fisher.
Owner Stan Kroenke should be willing to spend money to put a winning team on the field before the Rams move into their new facilities in 2018. The only question is whether or not Gruden would be willing to leave his broadcasting job to coach a team that is a work in progress.
If any city could tempt him, it might be Los Angeles.
