FOXBORO, Mass. — Make some room, Curtis Martin. You no longer have sole possession of the New England Patriots’ single-season rushing touchdown record.
LeGarrette Blount tied that mark — 14, set by Martin in both 1995 and 1996 — when he plowed his way into the end zone from 1 yard out during the first quarter of Monday night’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.
This season has been a rousing success for Blount, who entered Monday night needing just 43 rushing yards to reach the 1,000-yard plateau for the first time since his rookie season. He surpassed it on his second carry of the second half and finished with 1,029, a new career high.
Blount, who already had notched career highs for carries and touchdowns earlier this season, discussed potentially breaking Martin’s record earlier this week in a chat with ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss.
“It’s a great honor to just be mentioned in the category of Curtis,” Blount told Reiss. “Obviously, he’s one of the best backs to ever play this game. It’s an amazing thing to be a part of. If we tie it or break it, it will be a collective effort. It will be me, the offensive line, Josh, it will be the wide receivers, the tight ends, all of us, the fullback and everybody. When they go out there and block, they’re in sync and don’t miss a beat and open a lot of holes for me.”
