MLB Rumors: Nationals’ Bryce Harper Looking For $400 Million Contract

Two years ago Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton became the first MLB player ever to sign a $300 million contract. It’s only a matter of time before someone breaks the $400 million barrier, and that player could be Washington Nationals superstar Bryce Harper.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY, “Harper, according to (a Nationals) executive, is asking for a record deal that will exceed 10 years in length, and likely pay him in excess of $400 million.

Harper’s agent, Scott Boras, gave a comment to USA TODAY.

“I have had no long-term discussions with the Nationals on Bryce,” Boras said. “No terms, no offers discussed. Only arbitration-year discussions.”

Harper is just 24 years old and has been one of the league’s best young players for several years. But after winning the 2015 National League MVP award, he took a step back in 2016. Harper batted .246 with 26 home runs and 83 RBI in 143 games this past season, down from .330, 42 homers and 99 RBI the year before.

Still, there’s no denying his exceptional talent. If the Nationals and Harper don’t agree to a long-term deal, he would be eligible for free agency after the 2018 campaign.

Washington won the National League East division last season but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a five-game National League Division Series.
