The Chicago Cubs lost a bullpen piece but added two new ones.
The Cubs are close to an agreement with former Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Koji Uehara, according to multiple reports. The Boston Herald’s Evan Drellich was the first to report the Cubs and Uehara were nearing a deal, and Nikkan Sports since has said the contract is for one year and $4.5 million, pending a physical.
This news comes after the Cubs acquired closer Wade Davis from the Kansas City Royals to replace Aroldis Chapman, who reportedly is heading back to the New York Yankees.
Uehara most likely will serve in some sort of a set-up role ahead of Davis. The 42-year-old spent the past four seasons with the Red Sox and helped them win the 2013 World Series. He had a 2-3 record with a 3.45 ERA in 50 appearances for Boston in 2016.
