The New York Yankees typically don’t lose out on top free agents because of money, but paying close to $100 million for a relief pitcher is far from normal.
But ESPN’s Jayson Stark recently spoke to a general manager looking for bullpen help who believes the contracts of closers Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen will end up in the five-year, $85 to $95 million range.
MLB Network insider Jon Heyman reported Tuesday the Yankees have talked to both Chapman and Jansen about becoming their next closer.
Chapman began the 2016 season with the Yankees before being dealt to the Chicago Cubs prior to the non-waiver trade deadline and ultimately helping them win the World Series. Chapman pitched very well in both New York and Chicago, and he consistently throws around 100 mph.
The Yankees have missed the playoffs in three of the last four years, and acquiring a top closer should go a long way in helping them return to October baseball.
