NFL Rumors: Tony Romo Could Ask Cowboys To Release Him, Not Trade Him

The Dallas Cowboys are Dak Prescott’s team, so Tony Romo reportedly wants to find his.

While most expect the Cowboys to trade their former starting quarterback this offseason, despite what owner Jerry Jones says, Romo might ask to be released so he can pick his next team, ProFootballTalk reported Sunday, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.

It was reported last month that Romo would welcome a trade to the Denver Broncos, and PFT added in its latest report that he’s also looking at the Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins. A quarterback with Romo’s experience surely would draw interest from other teams, too, and a recent report pegged the Buffalo Bills as a possible suitor.

While Romo obviously would prefer to choose his own destiny, his contract makes doing so difficult. He is signed through 2019 (when he will be 39) with hefty salary-cap hits of $24.7 million, $25.2 million and $23.7 million in the final three years. Romo would be an expensive insurance policy, but given Jones’ longstanding commitment to him and Prescott’s short, albeit successful, run under center (20 touchdown passes, four interceptions in 13 games), it wouldn’t be totally surprising to see the veteran QB in Dallas next season and beyond.
