Shea McClellin Makes Cameo On Offense As Patriots Reach Into Bag Of Tricks

It’s been an eventful two weeks for Shea McClellin.

Six days after acrobatically blocking a field goal in a win over the Baltimore Ravens, the New England Patriots linebacker made a rare appearance as a slot receiver early in Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

In an effort to confuse the Broncos’ formidable defense, the Patriots inserted McClellin and split him out as an ineligible receiver.

It was the same tactic the team famously used against the Ravens in the 2014 divisional round, though those unorthodox formations didn’t include any defensive players.

To use McClellin, the Patriots subbed out left guard Joe Thuney for one play. It was the first play the rookie had missed all season.
