A quarterback change won’t generate controversy in the owner’s box at NRG Stadium.

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair praised head coach Bill O’Brien on Sunday for benching struggling quarterback Brock Osweiler, according to The Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson. Backup Tom Savage led the Texans to a comeback 21-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, and McNair said the quarterback switch was the right move.

“I’m just glad I wasn’t the one that had to make that decision,” McNair said. “I mean, that was a gutsy call. Give coach credit, he made a change and it was for the good of the team. We benefited from it. Now we have three good quarterbacks and we are proud of all of them.”

McNair’s Texans gave Osweiler a $72 million contract during the offseason, but his play suggests they made a mistake in doing so. Nevertheless, McNair trusts O’Brien’s judgement as Houston attempts to reach the playoffs.

“Tom played very well,” McNair said. “He got things going for us. That was a decision coach made and he’s going to do what he thinks is best for the team. He will be visiting with the quarterbacks and working with them deciding what we will be doing going forward. That’s his call.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones should take note of McNair’s handling of a high-profile, high-priced personnel decision.
