Yankees Will Retire Derek Jeter’s No. 2, Their Final Single Digit, In 2017

The New York Yankees officially are running out of numbers to retire.

The club announced Tuesday that it’s set to retire former shortstop Derek Jeter’s number this upcoming season on May 14, 2017, against the Houston Astros. Jeter also will receive a plaque in Monument Park and will be the 22nd Yankee to have his number retired.

Once the former captain’s iconic No. 2 is hung up, the Yankees will have retired all single-digit numbers.

The Yankees most recently retired catcher Jorge Posada’s No. 20, starting pitcher Andy Pettitte’s No. 46 and closer Mariano Rivera’s No. 42, all of whom were teammates of Jeter’s during his five World Series titles.

During his 20-year career, Jeter amassed 3,465 hits, which ranks sixth all time and first in franchise history, and he was named to 14 All-Star teams.
