Many of the most-iconic sports cars ever made featured six-cylinder engines, with more-recent models heavily favoring the V-format over in-lines. But even though V-6 engines currently are more popular than straight-six engines, there are plenty of pros and cons to both layouts.
With V-6 engines, for example, their V-configuration makes them more condensed, which is good for packaging. But the arrangement also means manufacturers have to compensate for their inherent unbalanced nature.

Although some manufacturers, such as Volvo and Porsche, have started replacing their six-cylinder units with new in-line fours that are lighter and more-powerful, which is even better news.
