UFC 208 Results: Germaine de Randamie Becomes First Women’s Featherweight Champion

Feb 12, 2017

History will be made Saturday night at UFC 208 in Brooklyn.

The first ever women’s featherweight champion will be crowned in a bout between Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie.

Holm took the UFC world by storm with her knockout victory over Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 in November 2015. She has struggled since then, though, with two consecutive losses to Miesha Tate and Valentina Shevchenko, respectively.

But that won’t be the only fight at the Barclays Center on Saturday night. Anderson “The Spider” Silva will take on Derek Brunson in a middleweight contest. Once considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the business, Silva has not registered a win in UFC since October 2012.

The main card will kick off at 10 p.m. ET, but fans can enjoy a bevy of preliminary fights in the meantime.

We will have real-time results for every UFC 208 fight, as well as round-by-round analysis for Holm vs. de Randamie and Silva vs. Brunson right here on our live blog. You also can watch all the action here.

Holly Holm Vs. Germaine de Randamie Round-By-Round Commentary
Pre-Fight
Who will become the first ever women’s featherweight champion?

First Round
It was a very evenly matched first round. Holm came out as the aggressor, but de Randamie did an excellent job at keeping her distance. Holm was far more active, but de Randamie was more accurate. “The Iron Lady” landed 16 strikes, while Holm’s activity only accounted for 10 strikes. Holm nearly registered an impressive takedown, but de Randamie’s defense proved to be too strong.

Second Round
Holm’s aggression carried over into the second round. This played into de Randamie’s hands, as she took advantage of an over-exposed Holm with a counter right strike.

There was some controversy to close the round, as de Randamie stung Holm with a combination of blows that were blatantly after the bell.

Third Round
The third round featured a bit of déjà vu. After Holm connected with a strong question-mark kick in the closing seconds of the round, de Randamie once again landed a bevy of punches after the buzzer sounded.

After a slap on the wrist for the first instance, the second occasion clearly angered the official. The two infractions could result in points taken from de Randamie.

Fourth Round
For the first time in her career, de Randamie saw the fourth round of a UFC bout. Holm continued to be the aggressor, but de Randamie once again saw the advantage in strikes landed. “The Iron Lady” managed to land 35 strikes, while Holm only converted on 20. The bout heads to a final round, which will be the third consecutive five-round fight for Holm.

Fifth Round
The final round featured arguably the most significant strike of the night, as Holm clipped de Randamie with a left hook. The most glaring stat of the night game is the difference in head strikes, as de Randamie registered 87, while Holm only landed 16.

Result
Germaine de Randamie becomes the first ever women’s featherweight champion via unanimous decision, 48-47, 48-47, 48-47.

Anderson Silva Vs. Derek Brunson Round-By-Round Commentary
Pre-Fight
Both fighters have made their way to the octagon.

First Round
The first round got off to a rather slow start but picked up towards the closing minutes. Brunson’s boxing background was on display, as he landed a couple of punches on “The Spider.”

Silva maintained his patience, waiting for a moment to strike and nearly connected with a heel kick.

Second Round
Brunson’s aggression showcased itself in the second round. He registered 19 strikes, 15 of which were significant. None of them seemed to rattle Silva, though, as he displayed his patented charisma before the Barclays Center fans.

Third Round
The last round featured the same tone as the previous two, uneventful. Silva’s patience was the story of the fight, as Brunson showed flashes of timidness throughout the bout. Silva never put himself in a vulnerable position, which clearly agitated Brunson.

Result
Silva’s experience proved to be the difference, as he earned the victory via unanimous decision, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27. “Spider” was overcome with emotion following the win.
