Football is back, which means it’s almost time to start judging players and teams based on real, in-season results rather than analyzing recent history and the potential impact of offseason moves.

In other words, the slate has been wiped clean for all 32 NFL franchises. And while it’s often easy to pinpoint which teams will be contenders and which are destined for pretender status, there are plenty of other examples to suggest a few underdogs could emerge from the pack, both in the AFC and NFC.

NESN.com’s Mike Cole, Ricky Doyle and Andre Khatchaturian recently made their AFC and NFC divisional picks while previewing the 2017 NFL season on “The Spread,” presented by MyBookie.ag.
