Tim Lincecum might be just one signature away from completing his Major League Baseball comeback.
The former San Francisco Giants ace has narrowed the list of teams he might join to two or three and is likely to join one of them this week, according to FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman. A number of teams are interested in signing Lincecum, but the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly have registered the strongest interest and might be willing to offer him a major-league contract.
Other teams, such as the Giants, remain interested in his services but aren’t ready to commit to giving him a major-league deal, according to Heyman.
Heyman’s report comes in the aftermath of the pitching showcase Lincecum held earlier this month in front of at least 25 scouts. He apparently was impressive enough to convince scouts he’s ready to return to the big leagues.
Lincecum, 33, last pitched in the majors in August 2016 when the Los Angeles Angels designated him for assignment. He didn’t pitch at all in 2017.
Prior to his stint with the Angels, Lincecum was one of the baseball’s premier pitchers. He was a four-time National League All-Star, two time Cy Young Award winner and helped the Giants win three World Series.
He’s preparing to fly to Arizona, where the Dodgers, Rangers and other apparent finalists in the race for his services are holding their spring training camps.
The baseball world soon will learn where he’ll sign and likely will take their first glimpse at his present-day ability before long.
