You just never know what life’s going to throw at you.
Carlos Hyde learned the danger of Twitter on Wednesday after reportedly agreeing to a contract with the Cleveland Browns. That’s because someone dug up an old tweet from 2011 in which the running back ripped Cleveland sports teams, calling them “horrible.”
This tweet obviously hasn’t aged well. The Cavaliers have been to three consecutive NBA Finals, winning a title in 2016. The Indians won 102 games in 2017, lost in the World Series in 2016 and have put together five straight winning seasons. And the Browns, well, they’re still the Browns.
But at the time, Hyde wasn’t wrong. The Cavs were coming off a 19-63 season in 2010-11, positioning them for the No. 1 pick they ultimately used to draft Kyrie Irving, and LeBron James hadn’t yet returned from his stint with the Miami Heat. The Indians were in the midst of a season in which they went 80-82 after finishing 69-93 the year before. And the Browns were, well, the Browns.
Still, Hyde, who was a running back at Ohio State at the time, probably regrets bashing Cleveland sports. Because now, after spending his first four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, he’s reportedly heading to Cleveland, where he’ll need to explain himself to a fan base who has seen its football team win one game over the last two seasons.
