Manchester United fans will endure nightmares about Wissam Ben Yedder in the coming months.

The Sevilla striker scored both goals in his team’s 2-1 upset win over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League. The Red Devils exited the competition in the Round of 16, prompting shock, anger and embarrassment among its global fan base.

The two-game series was goal-less when Ben Yedder replaced Luis Muriel in the 72nd minute. Ben Yedder would put Sevilla ahead just two minutes later when he beat Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea with a nicely struck shot from just inside the penalty area.

Ben Yedder all but confirmed Sevilla’s place in the quarterfinals in the 78th minute when he headed a shot, which de Gea tried to save but ultimately pushed against the crossbar and watched as it bounced back over the goal line.

Romelu Lukaku gave Manchester United a glimmer of hope by scoring in the 84th minute, but his strike represented a mere consolation for the Red Devils, who now must mourn the infamous defeat they suffered on home turf.

Meanwhile, Ben Yedder has emerged as a Champions League force this season. He has scored eight goals in seven games in European soccer’s elite competition and might have just earned himself a place in France’s 2018 FIFA World Cup squad.
