New England Patriots safety Duron Harmon reportedly was detained Friday by Costa Rican officials and sent back to the United States after being caught attempting to enter the country with marijuana.

According to a report from Costa Rican newspapers La Nacion and The Costa Rica Star, officials inspected Harmon’s suitcase at Juan SantamarĂa International Airport and found “58 grams of marijuana, three pipettes with marijuana oil, one confection of THS and four glass containers containing compressed marijuana (weighing 4.3 grams).”

Harmon reportedly had hidden the marijuana in an Arizona iced tea can.

“This involved a professional NFL player, who tried to come into the country carrying marijuana,” Fiscal Control Police director Irving MalespĂn said in a statement to the Costa Rican publications. “(He was) sent back to U.S. territory. It is important to highlight the work of different police bodies, who carry out important operations in different areas of the country. We want to prevent undesirable people from entering the country.”

Harmon, 27, is entering his sixth season with the Patriots. During the 2017 season — his first as a team captain — he led all New England defenders with four interceptions while also tallying 23 tackles and breaking up seven passes. He’s played in all but one game since entering the NFL in 2013.

“We are aware of the situation involving Duron Harmon Friday night in Costa Rica,” a Patriots spokesman said in a statement to multiple media outlets. “He has since returned to the U.S., and we are seeking to gain more information. At this time, we have no further update.”
