Maurice Hurst Diagnosed With Heart Condition, Sent Home From Combine

A medical complication cut Maurice Hurst’s NFL Scouting Combine experience short.

The former Michigan defensive tackle was diagnosed with a heart condition Sunday and sent home from Indianapolis for further testing, sources told NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The severity of Hurst’s condition is unclear. One of Rapoport’s sources compared his situation to that of former New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Nick Fairley, whose combine medical exam in 2011 raised similar red flags. Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Star Lotulelei also was diagnosed with a heart issue at the 2013 combine.

Hurst, a Westwood, Mass., native and the son of former New England Patriots cornerback Maurice Hurst, has been widely projected as a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was a force on the interior for the Wolverines in 2017, tallying 59 tackles, 5 1/2 sacks and 13 tackles for loss as a senior.

Defensive tackles, edge rushers and linebackers will run through on-field combine drills Sunday.
