NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is considering big changes to both the one-and-done rule and the NBA Developmental G-League.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported Monday that “multiple discussions between Adam Silver and his advisers on providing services to high school athletes that want to pursue a professional career out of high school” have taken place.
These services reportedly would prepare high school prospects for all aspects of the NBA, on and off the court. The goal would be to provide an alternate path for prospects to enter the NBA Draft other than the NCAA.
“We are looking at changing the relationship we have with players before they reach the NBA,” one high-ranking league official told Windhorst. “This is a complex challenge, and there’s still a lot of discussion about how it’s going to happen, but we all see the need to step in.”
These discussions come with the NCAA under scrutiny after an FBI probe revealed multiple violations from a number of high-profile programs. The NBA has made developments in encouraging more participation in the G-League with ‘two-way’ contracts and establishing G-League affiliates for 26 of the 30 NBA teams.
Although Silver has yet to make any definitive plans, Windhorst believes a plan could develop within the next few months, following the Commission on College Basketball’s annual report.
