Andrew Wiggins apparently wants more of the darn ball.
The Minnesota Timberwolves forward has told teammates he’s frustrated with his role as third option in the offense, ESPN Twin Cities’ Darren Wolfson reported on Wednesday’s show, according to colleague Derek James. All-Stars Jimmy Butler and Karl-Anthony Towns are the Timberwolves’ primary offensive threats, but Wiggins, the first overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft and 2014-15 Rookie of the Year, reportedly wants to to break out of their shadow.
Wiggins averaged a career-high 23.6 points per game last season, but his scoring has dipped to 17.9 points per game in 2017-18. Although Butler’s arrival via offseason trade has helped improve the Timberwolves’ results, Wiggins isn’t entirely comfortable with the new situation.
Wiggins, 23, signed a five-year max-contract extension in October, but the new deal won’t kick in until next season. Will he begin 2018-19 as one of the highest-paid malcontents in the NBA?
