Jerry Remy made a promise and he intends to keep it.
Remy, who has been NESN’s color analyst for Boston Red Sox games since 1988, started undergoing cancer treatment last season after his lung cancer returned. The 10-year Major League Baseball veteran recently completed his last round of cancer treatments. Remy opened up about his battle and his promise to return for Opening Day to NESN’s Dave O’Brien and Steve Lyons on FOX 25’s Red Sox broadcast Thursday.
“You know, it’s tough physically,” Remy said, per The Boston Herald. “It’s tough emotionally. But the fact is, the doctors are so good. You listen to the doctors and what they have to say, and as long as you’re seeing progress, you know, you feel good about it.”
Remy underwent surgery shortly before the 2017 MLB All-Star Game, and he planned to return during the second half of the season. But after the surgery, Remy was informed the cancer had spread and he needed to undergo radiation throughout the offseason.
The NESN analyst’s promise to return for Opening Day 2018 kept him positive throughout his treatment.
“You know, you go to these places where you get the chemo and get the radiation,” Remy said, “and you get people sitting to your left, to your right, in front of you, behind you, all in probably, maybe, worse shape than you are, you know? So, there’s a lot of people with tremendous courage out there that really help you get through things like this. And, you know, one of the things that helps me get through is the thought of coming back and doing some baseball. And I made a promise last year that I’d be back for Opening Day.”
“And I will be back for Opening Day,” Remy said, per FOX 25.
