NFL Rumors: Sammy Watkins, Chiefs Agree To Three-Year, $48M Contract

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense already had plenty of firepower, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes gained another weapon Tuesday.

The Chiefs and free agent wide receiver Sammy Watkins agreed to a three-year contract Tuesday, according to multiple reports. Watkins is expected to officially sign the contract Wednesday when the new league year begins and will make roughly $16 million per year on the new deal, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported, citing sources.

Watkins rebuilt his value during a strong 2017 season with the Los Angeles Rams, his lone campaign with the club after the Buffalo Bills traded him there last offseason. He played in 15 games, catching 39 of 70 targets for 593 yards. Those numbers don’t jump off the page, but Watkins did have a knack for finding the end zone, catching eight touchdown passes.

Now, Watkins joins an offense that already has plenty of big-play potential. The Chiefs employ a game-changing player in Tyreek Hill as well as one of the best tight ends in the league in Travis Kelce. Kansas City also found a gem in running back Kareem Hunt, who’s looking to build on a superb rookie season. As Mahomes gets set to take over for Alex Smith, the second-year QB obviously should benefit from having plenty of talent around him.
