That axiom certainly applies to predictions: You can’t bask in the glory of a prognostication come true if you don’t make the prognostication in the first place.
Unfortunately, it’s really hard to see into the future, especially in Major League Baseball, where a grueling, 162-game schedule produces unexpected twists and turns. Who thought David Price would be pitching out of the bullpen by the end of 2017? And did anyone predict Xander Bogaerts’ batting average dipping more than 40 points?
Alas, the warning signs won’t stop us from going out on a limb again this year. With the Red Sox’s season opener just a day away, it’s time to offer seven bold predictions — backed up by supporting evidence — about Boston’s 2018 squad, which has the potential to do some special things over the next six (seven?) months.
