If what Todd Bowles really meant what he said Tuesday, then the New York Jets have some explaining to do.
The Jets traded up for the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft on March 17 and paid a steep price, sending the Indianapolis Colts the No. 6 overall pick and three second-rounders.
Many assumed the Jets had a specific target in mind, likely a quarterback, if they were willing to give up that much to move up three spots. But that’s not exactly what Bowles said Tuesday morning at the NFL Annual Meeting in Orlando.
Considering the Jets originally had the No. 6 pick, this logic seems a little puzzling. Why trade up to the No. 3 pick (and part with three additional assets) if you were interested in six or seven players — one of whom you’d be guaranteed to land at No. 6?
Of course, Bowles and the Jets could have one or two players in mind and are simply aren’t revealing their real favorite targets. Most reports have suggested they could draft a quaterback like Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen or Josh Allen, and trading up also gives them a better chance at landing their top choice.
Looking at New York’s recent draft history, though, Bowles’ comments might not be too comforting for Jets fans.
