What Really Happened In Spurs’ Players-Only Kawhi Leonard Meeting

Danny Green is keen to set the record straight.

The San Antonio Spurs guard refutes reports about the players-only meeting regarding Kawhi Leonard’s status that his team held Saturday night, telling The San Antonio Express’ Tom Orsborn it was neither “tense” nor “emotional.” Green confirms the players met on their own and Tony Parker led the discussion, but he also says ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski’s report about the atmosphere in the meeting is wide of the mark.

“It was incorrect, wrong, false,” Green said. “I guess that’s the only way to put it. There was a meeting. That’s probably the only thing that was true in the article.”

Wojnarowski also reported Leonard’s teammates urged him to return immediately from a long-term quadriceps injury, and that his refusal to set a firm comeback date frustrated his fellow Spurs. Green also disputes that claim and added the meeting wasn’t solely about Leonard.

“Nobody in there was frustrated or took it the wrong way,” Green said. “We were communicating like adults. We don’t have personalities in our locker room to be coming after each other. We don’t have an emotional team. We don’t play like we are emotional. And in the locker room we don’t get emotional either. We talk like adults.”

When Orsborn asked Parker about the meeting, the Spurs veteran point guard offered much less than Green.

“You should know better,” he said. “You should know better that I can’t talk about that. That’s private stuff, locker room stuff. We always talk as a team, but you know we can’t talk about that.”

If a significant rift is indeed brewing in San Antonio, we probably never will hear about it from the mouths of the Spurs.
