Boston Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo’s season is over.

The 21-year-old suffered a left ankle fracture Saturday against the Florida Panthers, and the injury will not allow him to return to the ice before the summer.

Here’s the statement the Bruins released Tuesday:

Brandon sustained a fracture to his left ankle and is scheduled to have the fracture repaired later this week by Dr. George Theodore of MGH.  He will miss the rest of the regular season and playoffs. Expected recovery time is 3-4 months.

Carlo tallied six points (zero goals, six assists) and averaged 19:04 of ice time in 76 games this season.

Luckily for the B’s, they have much better depth on the blue line than they did last season. Boston welcomed captain and No. 1 defenseman Zdeno Chara back to the lineup Sunday and rookie D-man Charlie McAvoy returned to game action Tuesday.

The Bruins play the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night in one of their final four games of the regular season. The 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs begin April 11.
