Does Danny Ainge have one more huge move up his sleeve?
Kawhi Leonard has been limited to just nine games this season because of a lingering quad injury that’s seemingly causing friction with the San Antonio Spurs. It’s unclear whether he’ll return this season, and some folks believe the Spurs might even consider trading their star player this summer.
If the Spurs explore trades involving Leonard, one can’t help but wonder whether the Boston Celtics will at least consider the possibility. The C’s, of course, have several attractive assets — young players, draft picks, etc. — and could create an enticing package, as Jalen Rose highlighted Sunday while floating a potential blockbuster deal on ESPN’s “NBA Countdown.”
“They have the assets. They developed Jaylen Brown. They developed (Jayson) Tatum,” Rose said. “I’ve talked about this all year: In order for (the Celtics) to take the next step, they need another All-Star.
“They’re going to lose one of those players to acquire them. They’re gonna probably lose (Terry) Rozier and/or (Marcus) Smart. Probably gotta lose (Al) Horford for his salary. Kawhi Leonard with Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving in the Eastern Conference… ”
So, what do you think, Celtics fans? How much is too much for Leonard? Would you trade some combination of Brown, Tatum, Horford, Rozier, Smart and/or draft picks for one of the NBA’s best all-around players?
Leonard, who turns 27 in June, can opt out of his contract and become a free agent next offseason. It was long assumed the Spurs would lock up one of their franchise cornerstones, but the developments of this season — the last few weeks, in particular — have cast some uncertainty over the two-time All-Star’s future in San Antonio.
