LeBron James is one win away from re-writing the NBA record books … again.
The Cleveland Cavaliers superstar will set the NBA record for most consecutive division titles if his team wins one of its last two regular-season games, according to Cleveland.com’s Joe Vardon. No player has featured on 10 consecutive division-title-winning teams, but James can do just that if the Cavs beat the New York Knicks on Monday or Wednesday and clinch the Central Division over the Indiana Pacers, who trail Cleveland by 1 1/2 games.
“That’s pretty cool,” James said about his next potential record, per Vardon. “I had no idea about that, but that’s pretty cool. To be able to be in a position where you kind of control a division, that’s a pretty unique thing to me. I definitely didn’t know that.”
James led the Cavs to Central Division titles in 2008-09 and 2009-10 before joining the Miami Heat, with whom he won Southeast Division titles with in four consecutive seasons. He re-joined the Cavs ahead of the 2014-15 season, and the team has won three straight division titles and counting.
The Cavs and Philadelphia 76ers are locked in a tight race for the third seed in the Eastern Conference. The Sixers currently lead by one game with two left to play. If the teams finish with identical records, the Cavs would win the tiebreaker via winning their division since the Sixers are in third place in the Atlantic Division behind the Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics.
James will take the floor this week in pursuit of the division-title record, but the No. 3 seed probably is his foremost priority.
