The Boston Red Sox will honor the five-year anniversary of the 2013 Boston Marathon on Friday, April 13th before their game against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park, and will continue to recognize the city of Boston throughout the weekend.
The ceremony will be held before the 7:10 p.m. first pitch and will include participation from the family members of Krystle Campbell, Martin Richard, Lingzi Lu, MIT officer Sean Collier and Boston police offer Dennis “DJ” Simmonds, all of whom who died in the marathon bombing and the aftermath of the event in 2013.
Marathon survivors also will be honored in the ceremony. The tribute will be held in order to honor the resiliency of the community of Boston as well as recognize the good that came from that tragic day.
Friday’s game also will mark the beginning of a weekend-long series of charitable events and tributes as part of One Boston Day that both current and former players will take part in.
Sunday will mark the five-year anniversary of the tragic day at the Boston Marathon finish line, and the city will observe a moment of silence at 2:49 p.m., the time of the first explosion. The Red Sox will hold that moment of silence during the 7th inning stretch of their 1:05 p.m. game.
To close out the weekend tributes on Patriots’ Day, the Sox will host their annual 11:05 a.m. game while wearing their jerseys that say “Boston” across the front instead of the traditional home “Red Sox”.
As part of One Boston Day, the Red Sox will make a number of donations and organize volunteer efforts that will take place Friday through Sunday. Proceeds from the Red Sox Foundation’s 50/50 raffle from those three games will be donated to 11 different Marathon-related charities.
