AS Roma is preparing to welcome legions of new fans into its ranks in late 2018.
The Italian soccer club reveled Tuesday evening on social media in its upset win over FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. Roma reached fever pitch on Twitter after defender Kostas Manolas scored in the 82nd minute to extend Roma’s lead to 3-0 in the game, tie the series at 4-4 and give his team the advantage on away goals.
Roma’s delirious reaction to Manolas’ goal mirrored the frenzied scenes at Stadio Olimpico.
Having gathered its composure after the game, Roma dropped this gem on Twitter.
Roma’s win was historic for a number of reasons, besides the fact Barcelona was heavily favored. Just two teams had come from three goals behind after the first leg to advance in the Champions League knockout stages: Barcelona last season in the quarterfinals vs. Paris Saint-Germain and Deportivo La Coruña in the 2004 quarterfinals vs. AC Milan.
The Eternal city reportedly celebrated throughout the night, as Roma advances to the semifinals of European soccer’s elite competition for the first time since 1984. While the players already are speaking of going one step further, the team is readying merchandise for the resulting bundles of joy.
