BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Joe Lauzon’s struggles in the octagon continue.
The Massachusetts native lost to Chris Gruetzemacher via knockout (doctor stoppage) in a lightweight bout at UFC 223.
Lauzon started off strong in the first few minutes of the fight and managed to land a takedown, but Gruetzemacher finished the first frame with some lethal combinations and carried that momentum to the second round.
That’s where Lauzon got into trouble and suffered two gruesome cuts on his face.
Lauzon was able to withstand the blows until the end of the round, but medical officials deemed him unfit to continue the bout and Gruetzemacher was awarded the victory.
Lauzon is tied for most post-fight bonuses in UFC history, but he has struggled of late, losing six of his last nine UFC fights.
