John Cena’s will is an immovable object even Nikki Bella’s dreams couldn’t break through.
A source revealed to PEOPLE Magazine the inside story of the WWE superstars’ breakup on Monday, claiming Cena’s unwillingness to start a family was the main reason why their relationship ended. Cena and Bella were scheduled to wed May 5 in Mexico, but they announced their breakup Monday, sending shockwaves around the sports and entertainment worlds.
Since splitting from his first wife, Elizabeth Huberdeau, in 2012, Cena has famously insisted he’d never marry again and didn’t want kids. Yet, he proposed to Bella in April 2017 inside the ring at WrestleMania 33 after six years of dating. He reportedly had indicated a willingness to have kids with Bella but seems to have backtracked as their wedding date approached.
“She never gave him an ultimatum,” the source told PEOPLE. “He talked a really good game about having changed, about having his priorities straight, about knowing what’s important, and that it was her.
“But as the day got closer, it was like he just went back to who he’s always been — which is someone who puts himself first, always. He’s an incredibly dedicated, driven, ambitious guy. And for the longest time he said he didn’t think he had room in his life for a spouse or kids. It seems like in the end that was still the truth.
“But in that case, he never should’ve proposed, let alone in front of millions of people. Now she’s heartbroken. This was supposed to be the happiest time of her life. He ruined it and blew everything up.”
Cena is among the most popular good guys in WWE history, but the source now claims his act is a mere facade.
“In wrestling there are two archetypes: faces and heels,” source said. “A face is a good guy, a hero, who you root for. A heel is a villain, who sometimes can seem like a good guy but then turns around and shows his true, evil colors. John Cena just revealed himself as the ultimate heel.”
