Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 201811:05pm

7th inning, Red Sox 5-4: Ryan Brasier gets Joc Pederson to ground out to begin the inning, but allows back-to-back singles to pinch-hitter Max Muncy and Justin Turner. A walk to pinch-hitter Yasmani Grandal loaded the bases for Manny Machado. Machado hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Muncy and cutting Boston’s advantage to 5-4.

The Machado sac fly ends Brasier’s night. Eduardo Rodriguez coming in.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 201810:50pm

End 6th, Red Sox 5-3: Julio Urias tosses a 1-2-3 inning.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 201810:45pm

6th inning, Red Sox 5-3: Julio Urias taking over for Ryan Madson.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 201810:41pm

Mid 6th, Red Sox 5-3: Joe Kelly takes over in the sixth and man does he look good. Strikes out two in a 1-2-3 stanza.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 201810:30pm

End 5th, Red Sox 5-3: Ian Kinsler flies out to right to end the inning, but the Red Sox are back ahead.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 201810:30pm

5th inning, Red Sox 5-3: Rafael Devers keeps things going. With runners on the corners and two down, the third baseman laced a single to right, just getting past the outstretched glove of Brian Dozier. Runners now on first and second.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 201810:27pm

5th inning, Red Sox 4-3: The first pitch from Ryan Madson got past catcher Austin Barnes, which allowed runners to reach scoring position. Madson then walked Steve Pearce on four pitches, loading the bases for J.D. Martinez. The slugger however, struck out on three pitches.

Xander Bogaerts came through. He hit a chopper to short, and after getting the out at second, Brian Dozier was unable to throw Bogaerts out at first, allowing a run to safely cross.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 201810:19pm

5th inning, 3-3: After allowing a leadoff walk to Mookie Betts and a single to Andrew Benintendi, Clayton Kershaw gets pulled. Ryan Madson is coming in.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 201810:10pm

Mid 5th, 3-3: Matt Barnes gets pinch-hitter Cody Bellinger to fly out to right, stranding Justin Turner at third and ending the inning.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 201810:08pm

5th inning, 3-3: We’re tied up again. Matt Barnes allows a single to left to Justin Turner, then after getting David Freese to strike out, runners move to second and third on a blocked ball that got away from Sandy Leon. Manny Machado responds by grounding out to second for the second out, but scores Dozier in the process. Turner still is on third, so work remains to be done.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20189:56pm

5th inning: Chris Sale allows a leadoff walk to Brian Dozier, so that’ll mark the end of his night. Matt Barnes is coming in.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20189:52pm

5th inning: Chris Sale is coming back out for the fifth, but Matt Barnes has been warming and will get the call if the lefty ends up in trouble.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20189:51pm

End 4th, Red Sox 3-2: The fourth inning was kind to pitchers. Clayton Kershaw strikes out two and gets a groundout for a 1-2-3 stanza.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20189:45pm

Mid 4th, Red Sox 3-2: Best inning of the night so far for Sale. He gets Kike Hernandez and Yasiel Puig to strike out, then induces a line out to center from Austin Barnes to end the inning.

It’s Sale’s only 1-2-3 stanza thus far, and he used just 14 pitches to do it, upping his total to 86 on the night. With the top of the Dodgers’ order waiting in the fifth, could this be it for Sale?

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20189:35pm

End 3rd, Red Sox 3-2: Rafael Devers strikes out to end the inning, stranding two runners, but the Red Sox are back ahead.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20189:32pm

3rd inning, Red Sox 3-2: Good thing that call at first base was corrected. J.D. Martinez smacks a double off the center field wall, scoring Steve Pearce from first base and giving Boston the lead back.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20189:30pm

3rd inning, 2-2: What looked like an inning-ending double play results in the first replay overturn of the World Series. Steve Pearce narrowly beat a throw to first, but initially was called out. After a pretty brief review the call was reversed.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20189:21pm

Mid 3rd, 2-2: With runners on first and second and one out, Sale got out of the inning without further damage. He got Chris Taylor to strike out looking and Matt Kemp to ground out back to the pitcher.

Sale’s stuff still has been mostly fine, but he’s getting punished for making his mistakes. He’s also at 72 pitches, so the upcoming fourth inning could be big for him.
Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20189:16pm

3rd inning, 2-2: It’s all tied up. Justin Turner, David Freese and Manny Machado hit back-to-back-to-back one-out singles, with Machado’s scoring Turner from second base.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20189:06pm

End 2nd, Red Sox 2-1: After putting runners on the corners off singles from Rafael Devers and Sandy Leon, Jackie Bradley Jr. grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20188:54pm

Mid 2nd, Red Sox 2-1: Sale allowed a walk to Yasiel Puig with two outs in the inning, but struck out Austin Barnes to end the frame and keep the lead in tact.

The bad news is that Sale’s pitch count already is at 51.
Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20188:48pm

Red Sox 2-1: Matt Kemp put the Dodgers on the board with a solo shot. Kemp lifted a 94-mph fastball over the heart of the plate into the Monster seats on the eighth pitch of the at-bat. Bad mistake by Chris Sale.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20188:40pm

End 1st, Red Sox 2-0: The Red Sox grabbed all the momentum out of the chute. After getting two early runs across, the inning concluded when J.D. Martinez was picked off after leaving for a steal too early and Xander Bogaerts popped out.

Even though Martinez was picked, the Red Sox are showing great aggression on the bases. Mookie Betts got to second base by quickly stealing on Clayton Kershaw. They’ll certainly look to keep running all night.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20188:36pm

1st inning, Red Sox 2-0: The Red Sox are building on their advantage. J.D. Martinez lined a single to left, which plated Andrew Benintendi — who nearly was drilled by the ball as it went into the outfield — from second.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20188:31pm

1st inning, Red Sox 1-0: Boston is on the board first. With Mookie Betts on second base, Andrew Benintendi rips a single to right to bring the run home. Right fielder Yasiel Puig unnecessarily launched the ball home, which allowed Benintendi to get to second. The play at second was close and subsequently challenged by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, but the call was confirmed.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20188:21pm

Mid 1st, 0-0: Chris Sale got off to a pretty hot start, getting Brian Dozier to strike out looking and Justin Turner swinging. David Freese kept the inning alive with a single, but Manny Machado flew out to left to end the inning.

Sale’s fastball topped out at 96, but mostly nestled around 94-94. He used 21 pitches in the inning. The Red Sox should be encouraged seeing as Sale hasn’t pitched in 10 days.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20188:12pm

8:12 p.m. ET: First pitch from Chris Sale is a 94-mph fastball that misses low.

The 2018 World Series is underway.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20188:00pm

8 p.m. ET: The intros are complete, and we now are about 10 minutes from first pitch.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was met with a pretty big ovation, while Manny Machado (predictably) was the most heavily booed.

Logan Mullen Tue, Oct 23, 20186:58pm

7 p.m. ET: The Fall Classic is upon us, with first pitch in Game 1 between the Red Sox and Dodgers just over an hour away. While you wait, here are a couple of pregame nuggets.

Chris Sale is set to get the ball for Boston and will be opposed by Clayton Kershaw. Sale is making his first appearance since Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, and it’s really anyone’s guess how his stuff will be given the tumult that’s surrounded him these last couple months. Kershaw, meanwhile, is 2-1 this postseason as a starter, holding hitters to a .177 average. Save for an ugly showing in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, he’s been unkind to opposing batters.

Here are the full lineups for both teams:

Mookie Betts, RF
Andrew Benintendi, LF
Steve Pearce, 1B
J.D. Martinez, DH
Xander Bogaerts, SS
Rafael Devers, 3B
Ian Kinsler, 2B
Sandy Leon, C
Jackie Bradley Jr., CF

Brian Dozier, 2B
Justin Turner, 3B
David Freese, 1B
Manny Machado, SS
Chris Taylor, LF
Matt Kemp, DH
Kike Hernandez, CF
Yasiel Puig, RF
Austin Barnes, C

The weather is likely to play at least something of a role. At the time of this post, the tarp is on the field at Fenway, which comes after it was removed not long ago. Fans were herded away from exposed seats due to lightning in the area, and though the game is expected to start on time, the conditions won’t be optimal. Temperatures are expected to sit in the high 40s to low 50s. Fenway Park is not a great place for offense in late October, and weather being particularly nasty won’t help.

With all of that covered, go ahead and enjoy a nice dinner, crack open a cold one and get ready for some great baseball. We’ll see you back here around eight, and be sure to check in for updates and analysis after each inning.

Also, tune into NESN before and after the game, as we’ll have full coverage from the hometown studio crew.
