Dak Prescott Has Theory On Why Tom Brady Signs Patriots-Friendly Contracts

Dak Prescott believes the discount Tom Brady gives the New England Patriots starts at home.

In an interview with USA Today’s Jori Epstein published Friday, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback offered a reasonable theory about why the legendary quarterback plays under contract terms that are friendly to the Patriots: his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, earns so much money he can afford to leave some on the table for the good of his team.

Bundchen reportedly earned $17.5 million in 2017, which tops the $15 the Patriots paid Brady last season. Prescott believes other NFL players might sacrifice some of their earning power if their partners made millions, too.

“Nobody’s wife makes as much money as his wife does either,” Prescott said. “When Tom Brady isn’t the breadwinner in the home, then that’s a great problem to have. So in that case, he can do that. He can do his contract however you want to do it.”

The deal Brady signed in 2018 not only saved the Patriots $1 million in cap space, it also pays him much less than a serial Super Bowl winner should net. After all, he currently ranks 20th among NFL quarterbacks in terms of the average salary their contracts pay.

Brady, 41, has stated he wants to play until age 45, so he and the Patriots likely will have to agree to a contract extension if he is to stay in New England past next season. When that time comes, the rest of the NFL shouldn’t be surprised if Brady accepts a below-market salary as he has done for many years.
