The New England Patriots reportedly will restock their depleted coaching staff with a familiar name.
The Patriots are expected to hire Mick Lombardi, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported Monday.
Lombardi is the son of Michael Lombardi, a former Patriots assistant to the coaching staff. Michael worked alongside Patriots head coach Bill Belichick in the 1990s with the Cleveland Browns. He’s a former general manager of the Oakland Raiders and Browns and now works as an analyst for The Ringer and The Athletic.
Mick spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets as an offensive assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach. It wouldn’t be surprising if he replaces Jerry Schuplinski as Patriots assistant quarterbacks coach. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is quarterbacks coach. Schuplinski was poached by the Miami Dolphins, where he’ll work under head coach Brian Flores, another former Patriots assistant.
Mick Lombardi previously worked for the Patriots as a coaching and scouting assistant before leaving for the San Francisco 49ers and Jets. He started his coaching career at Fordham University.
In addition to losing Schuplinski and Flores, the Patriots also have seen assistant coaches Chad O’Shea, Brendan Daly and Josh Boyer depart the organization.
