Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was a surprise addition to the team’s injury report Wednesday, and the days since have provided more questions than answers.
Maye was a full participant, but exactly how bad is his knee injury?
New England experienced some panic when The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin reported the rookie quarterback underwent an MRI, and the accuracy of the report has been argued about ever since. Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo stood in front of media Friday, giving him an opportunity to clarify things for the first time since the whole debacle began.
He didn’t.
“I’m not sure if it was a residual from the game or not,” Mayo said, per team-provided video. “I will say, he looks good, he’s been out there at practice and he’s taking most of the reps… I’m not going to get into any of the medicals, the imaging, anything like that. I’ll say that I’m confident he’ll be ready to play (Sunday).”

Mayo wasn’t the only one being secretive about the injury, though, as Maye was surprisingly short when responding to questions about his knee.
“I’m feeling good,” Maye said just moments later, per team-provided video. “I’ve felt good out at practice the last two days, I’m feeling good now and I’m ready to go for Sunday… I don’t think injuries are something you try to share with the media. I’m looking forward to Sunday.”
Maye and Mayo did reveal something positive with their answers, as the rookie obviously is healthy enough to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. New England’s lack of desire to clarify things is still a tad odd, though.
Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said he was “not concerned” about the rookie Thursday, but the lack of clarity regarding the entire situation likely makes it hard for fans to agree.
