How Jerod Mayo Felt About Patriots Defender’s Public Criticism

The Patriots are typically not a team that airs their dirty laundry in public, at least not when Bill Belichick was the head coach. If you haven’t noticed, this Patriots team is anything but a Bill Belichick-run team.

After Davon Godchaux vocalized about some of his teammates being “selfish” in New England’s blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Jerod Mayo not only defended the defensive tackle’s actions but also admitted he was the source of the message.

“No, I’m okay with a player voicing that because that’s what I said in the squad meeting,” Mayo told reporters on Wednesday, per team-provided transcript. “Everything I say to the players, and I’m not saying it is a secret. We just have to play better together. Especially defensively, look — well, I would say across the board — it takes 11 people to make a big play. I know one person gets all the praise and things like that, but it takes everyone being on the same page. I agree with DG in regard to some of those plays are selfish plays. That’s exactly what it is.”

Looking back at the 30-13 drubbing, the Patriots’ defense consistently didn’t set the edge, ran past Brock Purdy on pass rushes and let the 49ers quarterback escape the pocket on numerous plays. It was selfish and undisciplined.

The 1-3 Patriots return to Gillette Stadium this Sunday to host the Miami Dolphins. The winner of the divisional clash will move out of the cellar in the AFC East.
