The Patriots made a point to set the record straight after making a franchise-altering decision.
New England was the talk of the NFL world Tuesday when reports indicated Drake Maye was in line to replace Jacoby Brissett as the club’s starting quarterback in Week 6. Jerod Mayo confirmed the transition behind center Wednesday morning and initially stated Maye and Brissett both found out about their role changes the evening prior.
Mayo ultimately corrected himself and clarified that he informed his quarterbacks about the new plan Monday night. This obviously paints a better picture in New England, as Maye and Brissett learning about their updated job statuses on social media could have created drama in the locker room.
Fortunately for the Patriots, it doesn’t sound like this changing of the guard will prompt any drama. Brissett, by all accounts, took his demotion in stride and Maye stumped for his veteran teammate even after usurping him on the depth chart.
Of course, a harmonious locker room doesn’t always translate to wins on the football field. The odds will be significantly stacked against Maye when he takes the field Sunday against the Houston Texans, which could lead to New England regretting its decision to roll with the rookie.
