The NHL’s inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off will pit some of the best hockey players in the world against one another.
That will turn four Boston Bruins players from teammates into foes for the international tournament, which features the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden.
Official rosters for each team were revealed Wednesday. Star defenseman Charlie McAvoy and standout goalie Jeremy Swayman headlined the crop of Bruins players in the competition as the duo will represent the United States. Bruins captain Brad Marchand got the call to join Team Canada while Elias Lindholm will suit up for Sweden.
Swayman is one of three goalies on the United States roster, along with Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars’ Jake Oettinger, who is a Boston University product.
Marchand finds himself on a Canadian squad that, unsurprisingly, is loaded with star players. The 36-year-old winger will play alongside Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon.

“It’s always a lot more fun playing with them than against them,” Marchand told NHL.com’s Amalie Benjamin. “Those are very fun tournaments, ones you’re really proud to be a part of, going through it with guys from my hometown and guys that we know and skate with will make it a little more exciting and a little more meaningful.”‘
Lindholm is joined by former Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark on Team Sweden. Hampus Lindholm was a notable omission from Sweden’s roster, but the Bruins defenseman is dealing with a lower-body injury that will keep him sidelined for “weeks.”
The 4 Nations Face-Off will replace the NHL All-Star Game this season and will be held from Feb. 12 through Feb. 20. Boston and Montreal are the host sites, so some games, including the championship contest, will be played at TD Garden.
