The Red Sox are looking to work some magic with one notable name down in Fort Myers, Fla.
Sean Newcomb will have an opportunity to pitch for his hometown club in 2025, as he was one of five non-roster invitees added to their spring training roster on Friday. Austin Adams, Yovanny Cruz, Noah Davis and Robert Stock were the others, all of them pitchers.
Newcomb, 31, is a native of Brockton, Mass., and pitched for three different clubs across his up-and-down major league career. The Los Angeles Angels originally selected him in the first round (No. 15 overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft, and he owns a 4.51 ERA with 438 strikeouts in 175 career appearances with the Atlanta Braves (2017-22), Chicago Cubs (2022) and Oakland Athletics (2023-24).
Boston isn’t exactly getting a left-handed version of Roger Clemens but will have an opportunity to tap into the stuff that had him ranked ahead of Aaron Judge, J.T. Realmuto, Matt Olson and Rafael Devers in the MLB’s prospect rankings back in 2015.
Adams, Cruz, Davis and Stock were all previously reported to be joining the Red Sox down at JetBlue Park.
