The Twins reportedly are an “active” team in the trade market, which means a Boston Red Sox World Series champion could be on his way out of the Twin Cities.
Minnesota could face a tough financial ordeal due to Diamond Sports Group/Bally Sports’ bankruptcy proceedings. That could mean the Twins will actively shed payroll and prepare for an uncertain financial future.
Christian Vázquez is one of their top assets, and the Padres spoke to the Twins about a potential trade, according to The Athletic’s Dan Hayes and Dennis Lin on Wednesday. A deal isn’t “imminent,” but San Diego needs a new primary catcher, and Minnesota reportedly is interested in Dylan Cease. It also needs a right-handed first baseman to round out the roster.
The Padres signed Martín Maldonado to a minor-league deal, but The Athletic reported that they still are looking for depth at the position. San Diego isn’t spending as much as it did in the last two offseasons so it will seek out options as best as possible. Vázquez is set to make $10 million this year, according to Spotrac.
Boston also certainly could use more depth at catcher, but it’s unknown if chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is looking at any more options at the position.
