Alex Bregman’s preference was to land in Boston, and now that he has, he doesn’t seem to mind where he plays.
One of the biggest questions now facing the Red Sox is what position Bregman will play for his new team. Rafael Devers played 947 of his 980 career games at third base, the position Bregman held down over the course of his nine seasons with the Houston Astros. And Kristian Campbell, one of the top prospects in all of baseball, was viewed as a potential Opening Day starter at second before Boston’s deal for Bregman.
What might that mean for the 2024 Gold Glover winner, who just signed a three-year deal reportedly worth $120 million? Fortunately for the Red Sox, Bregman is willing to do whatever is asked.

“I just want to play wherever it helps the team win,” Bregman told reporters in Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday, as seen on NESN. “I’ll leave that decision to AC (Alex Cora), and I’ll just do whatever he tells me to do and try and be there every single day, work hard and be ready to win.”
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said discussions about the defensive lineup remain ongoing.

“The most important thing was getting Alex into a Red Sox uniform as an elite defender,” Breslow told reporters, as seen on NESN. “The conversations about where he’ll play are ongoing and when the time is right we’ll make that determination. But I think AC and I have an obligation to the team, to the organization and most importantly to our fans, to put the best offensive and defensive team on the field that we possibly can.”
Cora said much of the same after the Red Sox officially announced the deal.
It’s fair to believe the 30-year-old Bregman could start the season at second while Devers remains at third. However, a strong showing from Campbell could open the door for him to play second, Bregman to play third and Devers to serve as Boston’s designated hitter. That might be the best long-term combination.
While so much remains up in the air, the obvious non-negotiable is Bregman will be somewhere in the infield when Opening Day rolls around.
