There’s been a lot of chatter about where Alex Bregman’s optimal position should be on the Red Sox, and those discussions likely won’t end soon.
Boston manager Alex Cora confirmed Saturday that Bregman would make his Grapefruit League debut Sunday at third base, per WEEI’s Rob Bradford. Trevor Story would start at shortstop, but it was not made clear who would start at second base, per the Boston Herald’s Gabrielle Starr. With Garrett Crochet starting at JetBlue Park, it’s likely the Red Sox go with a majority major league lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Cora did not want to pin Bregman to one specific position. Rafael Devers affirmed he only wanted to play third base and earned support from Triston Casas. Cora continued to tell reporters throughout the month that the team would continue to evaluate what was best for the team. Bregman also paid the “drama” no mind and trusted the coaching staff’s decisions.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Bregman move around throughout Grapefruit League play, but the 30-year-old making his Red Sox spring training debut at third base was an interesting decision.
First pitch for Sunday’s Grapefruit League matchup between the Red Sox and Blue Jays is scheduled at 1:05 p.m. ET on NESN 360.
