Alex Cora is thrilled the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman and knows Boston is a better team with the veteran infielder on the roster.
But a successful offseason isn’t the goal for the ballclub, which missed the postseason each of the last three seasons.
“It feels great,” Cora told reporters in Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday, as seen on NESN. “But like Sam (Kennedy) said, we got work to do. That’s going to be the message.”

Kennedy spoke glowingly about the addition of the two-time MLB All-Star, but also kept his focus on the main thing.
“He (Bregman) fits like a glove for our organization and just really, really pleased we were able to close the deal and bring him here. So, excited for that,” the Red Sox president told reporters, as seen on NESN. “But we haven’t done anything yet. It’s February. We got a lot to accomplish this year.”

Boston signed Bregman, one of the top free agents this offseason, to a three-year contract reportedly worth $120 million. The two-time World Series champion and 2024 Gold Glove winner elevates the team’s talent exponentially. As did the offseason trade for starting pitcher Garrett Crochet and signing of Walker Buehler, among other moves.
“I think right now 30 teams are going to scream out loud that they’re going to win the World Series. Yeah, of course that’s the goal. But for us to get there, we got to work hard,” Cora said. “I truly believe that the front office and ownership executed. Now it’s up to us to keep going, keep getting better. We want to be in October, we want to play in October. But we have to take the right steps to get there.”
A driving factor in Bregman joining the Red Sox was his belief he could compete for postseason berths and titles. He praised Boston’s mix of veterans and youth as well as the opportunity to play for a fanbase that cares and at a home ballpark where he has had historic production.
Now it’s up to Bregman and his Red Sox teammates to work and build on their offseason trajectory.
