The Red Sox reportedly agreed to a deal with Alex Bregman, and it was a strange spot to be in for a Cubs prospect.
Chicago attempted to upgrade its infield by trying to sign Bregman. The two-time World Series champion didn’t bite on its offer and reportedly agreed to a three-year, $120 million deal with Boston.
That could open things up for Cubs prospect Matt Shaw, whose phone was buzzing this week. Shaw was born in Springfield, Mass., and revealed to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers on Friday that his friends texted him about the reported Bregman signing. Shaw said his friends called it a “win-win” situation since their hometown team got a massive upgrade and they get a chance to see Shaw earn an Opening Day roster spot.
Shaw’s roster spot is by no means guaranteed, but since the Cubs failed to sign Bregman, there is less competition for the prospect.
The 23-year-old might not be able to voice those sentiments aloud, but it was an interesting and perhaps and awkward spot to be in for the Massachusetts native.
